Requirements
Even though US rules are generally simpler and easier to follow than other countries, importing pets still needs careful planning to succeed. Dogs
– A veterinary health certificate that displays that your pet is healthy and able to fly. This certificate must be completed within 10 days of travel.
– A microchip. Even if it’s not always required by the airlines, it’s highly recommended that you apply it.
– Proof of rabies vaccination from everywhere where rabbies is present. Puppies musn’t be vaccinated before 3 months old, this means that the youngest dog that can be imported must be at least 4 month old.
– Optional vaccines such as Hepatitis, Parvovirus, Distemper and Bordatella.
– For dogs that are born in countries that are affected with screwworm, the following things are required:
A) The dog must be accompanied by a certificate signed by an official veterinary office of the region of origin, stating that the dog has been inspected and declared free of screwworm within 5 days before shipment to the United States.
B) The certificate must state that your dog is free from screwworm, or that was found to be infested with it and held in quarentine while in treatment until it was free of screwworm before leaving the region.
Cats
A) A health certificate issued by a veterinarian, stating that your cat is healthy and fit to fly. This certificate must be completed within 10 days of travel. This may not be required by the USDA or the CDC but it could be asked for by the airline.
B) Cats don’t require to have proof of rabies vaccination to be imported into the US, however, some states do require this vaccination for your cat so it’s a good step ahead to check with the state and local health authorities before your trip.
C) There are several optional vaccines to apply to your cat in case it’s needed like Calicivirus, Rhinotracheiths or Feline enteritis (known also by Panleukopenia or Feline distemper).
Other requirements to keep in mind
Preparing your pet for export.
It is always smart to check with your country of origin to get familliar with all the necessary export requirements for any pet. Most countries demand for a government approval or other type of official government veterinarian inspection in order to export your pet. You can learn the export requirements by contacting your country’s Ministry or Department of Agriculture.
Know your individual airline requirements
There are some airlines that require additional documentation for animals under certain cases. If you’re booking your pet’s travel on your own, check with the airline you’re using to ensure your pet is accepted in the flight and you have all the paperwork needed.
